Abstract
The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of anxiety and depression amongst patients suffering from polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOD)/Hirsutism.
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine ailment among females of reproductive age group. 7% of females of childbearing age worldwide are suffering from PCOD which is considered as a genetic disorder. In addition there is a large number of patients suffering from idiopathic hirsutism.
An observational study is being conducted in Mayo Hospital Lahore Out Patient Department. Patient suffering from hirsutism were assessed for PCOD by applying Rotterdam criterion and HAAD scale was applied to assess anxiety and depression . Among 44 females enrolled so far 24 were found to be suffering from PCOD, whereas the rest suffered from idiopathic hirsutism. 16(36%) patients are suffering from anxiety,2 patients had borderline anxiety. 12(27%) are found to be cases of depression, 6 had boderline depression. Among patients diagnosed with PCOD 10(41%) and 12(50%) are suffering from anxiety and depression respectively, only 2(8%)have borderline depression. Among the 20 idiopathic cases, 6(30%) and 2(10%) suffered anxiety and depression, with 4(20%) borderline cases. According to the results obtained so far anxiety and depression has been found to be more prevalent in PCOD patients than in idiopathic hirsutes. However further data collection and completion of study is required to arrive at a solid.
